Chest over two drawers
tulip, pine, and red cedar
37” h x 40” w x 19”

Chests like this one were probably common fixtures in the homes of early Philadelphians. The Head inventory records many such chests were sold in matching pairs, no doubt to provide the newly desired symmetry for increasingly sophisticated interiors.

Despite its common appearance, this piece has many features to recommend it. A fashionable double arch mold surrounds the drawers and false (upper) drawer fronts with hardware to complete the illusion that this is a finer chest than it really is.

This piece features wide board construction, an aromatic cedar back, and the crude but traditional “clamped” ends of the top. Bent over hand forged nails secure the clamp and snipe hinges that secure the lid to the case.

Antiques from this period are exceedingly rare and valuable, making this piece an excellent value at $2300. Solid Pennsylvania Black Walnut, decoratively painted (probably inauthentic), or inlaid versions of this chest are available from $3000.
